NONGSTOIN: The Khasi Students Union (KSU) Rambrai Circle has expressed concern over a Primary Health Centre (PHC) in remote Rambrai area which has been reportedly defunct for over two months due the government’s delay in appointing a replacement following transfer of the previous doctor.

The KSU has requested the State Government through the Health Department to intervene into the matter and initiate the functioning of the PHC, the only health centre in the area covering more than 50 villages.

KSU Rambrai unit president Pyrshang Jyrwa told reporters here on Monday that people in Rambrai and adjoining areas suffer not only due to the absence of doctors but also the lack of necessary infrastructure including proper water supply and electricity at the health centre.

Jyrwa said that lack of healthcare in the region was a cause of great difficulty, hardship and pain to the people living the area and that the poor health service is further compounded by bad road connectivity, forcing people seeking medical help to travel for 10 hours on a mountain road to reach Rambrai.

The KSU members on Monday met the Additional District Medical & Health Officer, West Khasi Hills (ADM&HO) and requested him to appoint a doctor at Rambrai PHC immediately. The ADM&HO, in return, has assured the student body that the Health department will do their best to resolve the situation.

Meanwhile, the KSU Rambrai Unit, admitting knowledge of the rumour that the proposed C&RD Block to be set up at Rambrai has been diverted to another district, has asked the State Government to speed up the process of setting up the C&RD Block in Rambrai, failing which the Union has threatened to take strong action against the Government.
