SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Non-Conventional Rural Energy & Development Agency (MNREDA), Nongstoin, in collaboration with the district administration of South West Khasi Hills District recently organized a felicitation programme for the Uttar Jeevan Raksha Padak Award recipients in which eco-friendly solar lanterns were distributed to class IX students at the Multipurpose Hall DC Complex, Mawkyrwat.

Addressing the gathering, Rowell Lyngdoh explained that the gesture stands symbolic to a greater idea by former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, to provide energy to every corners of the State, especially in rural areas, where scarcity of energy or power is very high.

Lyngdoh said that breakthroughs in modern technology have helped in the development of the eco-friendly solar lanterns that were distributed to the students to enable them to pursue their studies.

He further lauded Stripleaseman Mylliem of Mawsain village, recipient of the Uttar Jeevan Raksha Padak Award from the President of India for his brave act of saving the life of his sister.
