PARIS, June 7: Group I of the 2026 FIFA World Cup may not qualify as a traditional “group of death”, but it promises one of the tournament’s most anticipated contests as France’s Kylian Mbappe and Norway’s Erling Haaland prepare to face each other on football’s biggest stage.
France
Among the favourites to lift the trophy, France enter the tournament looking to add to their 2018 World Cup triumph after finishing runners-up in 2022. However, concerns remain over the balance of the squad, particularly in midfield, where coach Didier Deschamps has recalled veteran N’Golo Kante.
Much of the spotlight will fall on captain Kylian Mbappe. The Real Madrid forward remains one of the world’s most dangerous attackers, but arrives under pressure following criticism over recent performances and France’s failure to win major honours in recent seasons.
A player to watch is Ousmane Dembele, who has emerged as a key figure for both club and country. His pace, creativity and ability to unlock defences could prove crucial for France’s title ambitions.
Norway
Norway return to the World Cup for the first time since 1998 after an impressive qualification campaign that saw them win all eight of their matches.
Armed with a talented generation of players, the Scandinavians will fancy their chances of reaching the knockout rounds.
Erling Haaland is undoubtedly their biggest weapon. The prolific striker scored 16 goals during qualifying and will be eager to make a mark on his World Cup debut while leading Norway beyond the group stage.
Captain Martin Odegaard remains the creative heartbeat of the team. His vision and passing ability provide the perfect platform for Haaland and Norway’s attacking players.
Senegal
Making their third consecutive World Cup appearance, Senegal continue to be one of Africa’s strongest teams. Built on defensive solidity, physical strength and swift counter-attacks, the Teranga Lions are capable of troubling any opponent.
Veteran forward Sadio Mane remains the team’s inspirational leader and leading goal threat. Despite being in the latter stages of his career, his experience and knack for delivering in major matches make him indispensable.
At the back, Kalidou Koulibaly anchors the defence and provides leadership. His presence will be vital if Senegal are to challenge for a place in the knockout rounds.
Iraq
Iraq return to the World Cup for the first time since 1986 after navigating a lengthy qualification route that included intercontinental playoffs.
Although considered underdogs in the group, they have already shown resilience and fighting spirit.
Striker Aymen Hussein will carry much of Iraq’s attacking responsibility, while midfielder Amir Al-Ammari is expected to play a key role in controlling possession and launching counter-attacks.
For Iraq, the immediate objective will be to secure their first World Cup point and potentially record a historic first victory on football’s grandest stage. With France, Norway and Senegal all harbouring ambitions of reaching the knockout rounds, Group I promises intense competition. Yet the clash between Mbappe and Haaland is likely to be the contest that captures the imagination of football fans around the world. (Agencies)
