SHILLONG, June 7: Mawsynram MLA Olan Sing Suin has expressed confidence that improved road connectivity will significantly boost tourism in the region, with several infrastructure projects currently under way.
Suin stated that the road from Phlangwanbroi to Ranikor is under construction, while the World Bank-funded Welloi-Phlangwanbroi road is in the tendering stage. The tendering process is expected to be completed by June, with Suin hopeful that both projects will be finished within two years.
The MLA also reiterated his demand for a direct road link between Mawsynram and Sohra via the Dewsaw-Nongwar route. He recently discussed the proposal with Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, advocating for a connection that would bridge the two major tourist hubs.
Suin pointed out that roads have already been constructed from Dewsaw to the banks of the Umiam River and from Nongwar to Phali on the Sohra side. He suggested that a bridge across the river would link these routes, creating a unified tourism circuit.
If realised, the project would allow visitors to travel from Sohra’s living root bridges to the Umiam riverbank and onward to Mawsynram’s Rain Museum, which is also under construction. Suin added that such connectivity would establish both Mawsynram and Sohra as premier destinations in Meghalaya.
