SHILLONG: The Achik National Volunteer Council (ANVC) has issued a ‘quit notice’ to the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) and the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB).

In a statement issued here, ANVC spokesperson Torik Jangning Marak said, “The NDFB and ULFA cadres operating in Garo Hills should quit the area immediately as they belong to the anti-talk faction and are under direct influence of Pakistan’s ISI and are involved in various attacks in Garo Hills in the last couple of months.”

“They should quit Garo Hills in the next 20 days,” Marak added in his statement.

The ANVC has also charged the two Assam-based outfits of being involved in the killing of three policemen and five labourers in Garo Hills and shooting of a traditional head in connivance with the Garo Hills-based outfit Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA).

“The ULFA and NDFB have formed strategic alliances with the GNLA, an off-shoot of the ANVC. Both the Assam-based rebel groups have transformed the GNLA into a violent group with access to sophisticated arms and ammunitions. “We don’t want to turn Garo Hills into another Assam and they should immediately leave our homeland,” the ANVC added.

It may be mentioned that the ANVC had, earlier, warned the GNLA of dire consequences if any law and order problem arose during a bandh called by the outfit on Tuesday to mourn the death of four of its cadres by State Police last week.

However, the GNLA shot dead a truck driver and his helper near Mendipather and exploded a grenade inside the Chokpot Block Office in South Garo Hills district in broad daylight, during the bandh hours.

Reacting to the fresh attacks by the GNLA, the ANVC spokesperson said, “Whatever has to come for GNLA it will come soon.”

It may be mentioned that the GNLA and ANVC have been indulging in a ‘war of words’ for the past several days which has resulted in a tense situation in the Garo Hills region.
