SHILLONG, June 9: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday asserted that electric vehicles (EVs) are well-suited for Meghalaya’s hilly terrain and underscored that strengthening public transport is central to easing Shillong’s traffic congestion.
Speaking at the launch of five electric buses under the PM eBus Sewa Scheme, Sangma announced that the state’s policy exempting EVs from registration fees and road taxes is being renewed. He clarified that the recent lapse in exemptions was automatic following the end of the initial three-year term and will be restored once the Cabinet approves the renewed policy.
The Chief Minister noted that regenerative braking technology makes EVs particularly efficient for the state’s geography. He added that senior officials and ministers would be encouraged to use electric vehicles to lead by example.
To address traffic, Sangma highlighted a long-term strategy including improved parking, better urban planning, and the development of the new administrative city at Mawdiangdiang to relocate government offices.
“The ultimate objective is to encourage residents to shift from private vehicles to a reliable and predictable public transport system,” Sangma said.
The new air-conditioned buses have a range of 180 to 200 km per charge and can accommodate 25 passengers. Urban Affairs Commissioner & Secretary Dr Vijay Kumar D stated that 50 e-buses have been sanctioned for Shillong. The system operates on a Gross Cost Contract (GCC) model, where operators are paid based on service standards rather than fare collection.
The state expects a combined fleet of 150 diesel and electric buses within six months, aiming to serve approximately 60,000 daily commuters.
