HSPDP seeks monument for late Hopingstone Lyngdoh in Nongstoin
SHILLONG, June 9: The Youth Wing of the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP), West Khasi Hills, has submitted a proposal to the Deputy Commissioner seeking the installation of a monument or statue of late Hopingstone Lyngdoh in Nongstoin town. In a memorandum submitted on June 5, the youth wing stated that the proposal aims to honor the legacy of the former Nongstoin MLA and veteran leader of the Meghalaya statehood movement. The party described Lyngdoh as a dedicated public servant who championed social justice and the welfare of the people. Lyngdoh’s political career was marked by significant milestones: he represented Nongstoin as MLA for 43 years and served as the Chief Executive Member of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) for 27 years. He also held office as Deputy Chief Minister and served as a Member of Parliament from the Shillong constituency. The youth wing suggested that the monument be placed at a prominent location, such as a major junction or public park, to serve as a historical landmark. They noted that the statue would help preserve Lyngdoh’s legacy, inspire future generations, and promote awareness of the state’s political history.
