SHILLONG, June 9: NPP leader and MDA nominee James P.K. Sangma is set to become Meghalaya’s next Rajya Sabha member after his nomination papers for the state’s lone seat were found valid during scrutiny on Tuesday.
Returning Officer and Assembly Secretary Malthus S. Sangma conducted the scrutiny at the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Secretariat and accepted Sangma’s nomination without objections.
Sangma filed his nomination on Monday in the presence of Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, cabinet ministers, legislators and supporters. No other candidate filed papers for the seat, leaving him poised to be elected unopposed.
The only formality that remains is for the withdrawal of nomination deadline to end on June 11, before James is officially declared elected, making the scheduled June 18 poll redundant.
