Guwahati, June 10: A large group of teachers from various schools across different districts of Tripura, participated in an orientation programme on sustainability education held in Agartala on June 7 last.

The day-long orientation programme was organised by region’s premier biodiversity conservation organisation Aaranyak (www.aaranyak.org) in collaboration with the Tripura Science Forum and with support from Wipro Earthian, in the conference hall of the Tripura State Pollution Control Board.

The orientation served as an enriching platform for participating teachers to bring clarity to  their understanding of environmental issues while developing practical strategies to promote sustainable practices among students of their respective schools and local communities.

“The true dimension and magnitude of science extend far beyond our textbooks; science is an art of healthy living,” said Ms. Panna Chakraborty, Secretary of the Tripura Science Forum, while inaugurating the Teachers’ Orientation Programme on Sustainability Education.

Emphasising the need to adopt sustainable practices in everyday life, she highlighted the crucial role of science education in nurturing responsible citizens capable of addressing today’s environmental challenges through informed action and ethical values.

The programme brought together 25 teachers from schools across various districts of Tripura, reflecting a growing interest among educators in integrating sustainability into classroom teaching and school activities.

During the inaugural session, Jayanta Kumar Pathak, Assistant Director and In-charge Head of Environment Education and Capacity Building Division (EECBD) of Aaranyak, said  the organisation promotes environmental awareness, biodiversity conservation and sustainable development across Northeast India.

“Since 2022, Aaranyak has been actively advancing Environmental and Sustainability Education (ESE) in partnership with the Wipro Foundation,” Pathak said.

He underscored the transformative potential of sustainability education in developing critical life skills and preparing students to become informed and responsible citizens.

Pramod Lal Ghosh, renowned engineer and Vice-President of the Tripura Science Forum, spoke about the importance of lifelong learning and the influential role teachers play in shaping a more sustainable and equitable future. He encouraged educators to inspire positive change through knowledge and action.

The technical session was facilitated by Tikendrajit Gogoi, Project Officer (ESE Educator) at Aaranyak, who guided participants through practical approaches to sustainability education.

Focusing on the interconnected themes of Sustainability and Biodiversity, Waste, and Water, the session combined interactive discussions with real-world examples to demonstrate how educators can foster environmental stewardship among students. Teachers exchanged ideas and explored innovative methods of incorporating sustainability concepts into their curricula.

Certificates were awarded to all participants in recognition of their successful completion of the programme.

A total of 45 participants, including members of the Tripura Science Forum, officials from the Tripura State Pollution Control Board, teachers and Aaranyak staff, attended the event.

The programme concluded with a renewed commitment from participants to integrate sustainability education into their teaching practices, marking another significant milestone in strengthening environmental education and empowering educators as catalysts for sustainable development in Tripura.
