SHILLONG: The State Government on Thursday reiterated its commitment towards addressing the burning issue of influx and entry of illegal immigrants.

“We are committed towards introducing a comprehensive mechanism for a permanent solution to this long-pending problem,” a senior government official said while reacting to the concern expressed by the consortium of 13 pro-ILP pressure group on the delay by the State Government in implementing a ‘comprehensive mechanism’ to tackle influx.

The official also assured that the State Government would take all possible steps to ensure that the ‘mechanism’ which was agreed upon during the April 29 meeting between the pressure groups and the Government would be put in place at the earliest. “The commitment of the State Government to complete the due diligence of putting a comprehensive mechanism to deal effectively with the issue of influx and illegal immigration after productive engagement with the NGOs should not be doubted by anyone at this juncture,” the official added.

The official, further, informed that the Government was presently engaged in conducting an internal exercise to appropriately structure the mechanism so as to avoid conflict with any law passed by the Parliament or any of the provisos of the Constitution.

Earlier on Wednesday, the pressure groups had expressed their disappointment at the delay by the State Government in implementing the ‘comprehensive mechanism’ that had been suggested by them to effectively deal with influx.
