East Rutherford, June 15: Senegal will attempt to recreate one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history when they take on tournament favourites France in their Group I opener on Wednesday.
The West Africans famously stunned the defending champions 1-0 in the opening match of the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan, a victory that marked a dream debut for Senegal and contributed to France’s shock early exit from the tournament.
More than two decades later, Senegal will once again look to spring a surprise against a French side widely tipped to lift the trophy in 2026.For France, the tournament carries extra significance as it will be the final World Cup under head coach Didier Deschamps. The 56-year-old, who won the World Cup both as a player and manager, is set to step down after the tournament, with former captain Zinedine Zidane expected to succeed him.
Deschamps has already guided France to 14 World Cup victories and could surpass the record of 16 wins by a manager if Les Bleus enjoy another deep run in the competition.
The 2018 world champions have been among the most consistent teams on the global stage. (Agencies)
