2-day workshop on Muga silk production

DADENGGRE, June 16: A two-day training workshop aimed at boosting Muga silk production through scientific organic agriculture commenced on Tuesday at the Farmers Training Centre, Jengjal Bolbokgre. Organised under the PM-DevINE project, the initiative focuses on the golden-hued Muga silk of the Garo Hills to enhance rural livelihoods and income.
The programme is a joint effort by the District Sericulture Office (West Garo Hills), the North East Centre for Technology Application and Reach (NECTAR), and the Central Silk Board (RSRS, Boko).Speaking as the chief guest, Sanre G Momin, Deputy Director of Sericulture, encouraged farmers to adopt sustainable silkworm rearing practices. She noted that the region possesses ample land for cultivation and suggested that exposure trips would help beneficiaries adopt modern techniques to improve their yield.
Michelle Momin, District Mission Manager (MSRLS), detailed the collaboration between MSRLS and the Sericulture department in forming Muga clusters to uplift the rural economy. She urged participants to utilize the training to transform the region’s financial prospects.
Technical sessions included presentations by SAS Rahman of the Central Silk Board on Muga rearing technology and Dr Sunita Upadhya of NECTAR on organic farming and the “farm lab” concept. A practical demonstration on preparing bio-organic fertiliser was conducted by Romeo Ch. Momin, Functional Manager at CMSRLS.
The event concluded with the distribution of organic fertiliser manuals to beneficiaries from across the Garo Hills region.
