Kolkata, June 18: Former Trinamool Congress MLA Nirmal Ghosh on Thursday appeared at the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) office in connection with the RG Kar rape and murder case. The CBI has been active again in the investigation into the rape and murder of the junior female doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024.

On Wednesday, officials visited the crematorium in Panihati, where she was cremated. This time, the investigating officers summoned the former MLA of the area for questioning. It may be noted that the deceased doctor’s mother is now a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Panihati, having won the recent state Assembly elections.

She has been raising questions about the investigation from the very beginning. Allegations have included destruction of evidence, negligence and attempts to conceal the incident. The family alleged that the second autopsy of the victim’s body was prevented and that the body was cremated in haste without handing over documents to them.

In view of these allegations, the victim’s family demanded the arrest of three people, including then MLA Nirmal Ghosh. Last month, the victim’s parents approached the Sealdah court regarding the matter. Recently, central investigation officials have intensified their probe into the RG Kar case.

On Wednesday, the CBI went to the Panihati crematorium to collect information about what happened after the deceased doctor was brought there and how her body was cremated. In this regard, the former MLA’s son, Tirthankar Ghosh, said the CBI had called him and his father for questioning. He added that they wanted to cooperate with the investigation, which is why his father went to the CBI office.
