GUWAHATI, June 18: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday reviewed the progress of ongoing schemes and key issues of the education department covering school, secondary, higher and technical education sectors.

“Chaired a key review meeting with stakeholders from Assam’s education department. Our vision is to holistically transform the state’s education ecosystem and deliver the best quality of teaching for the student community. Our focus rests on three key pillars – improve quality, end regional disparity and enhance access for our students,” Sarma said after the meeting.

Assam education minister Ranoj Pegu and officials of the education and finance departments were present at the meeting.

During the review, the chief minister assessed budgetary allocations and expenditure across various education sectors and examined the implementation status of flagship schemes, including Nijut Moina and Nijut Babu.

The meeting also reviewed the distribution of free scooters, bicycles and textbooks, along with the progress of the state’s free admission scheme aimed at supporting students pursuing higher education.

Special emphasis was laid on the functioning of government model colleges and tea garden model schools, while discussions were held on ongoing teacher recruitment drives across different categories.

The chief minister also reviewed measures to reduce dropout rates in higher education, proposals for the creation of new posts, and plans to upgrade high schools into higher secondary institutions.

“Clear instructions were given to ensure key indicators such as dropout ratio, teacher-student ratio, geographical parity, gross enrolment ratio among others exceed national average,” he stated.

Besides, the chief minister asked the department to ensure standardised infrastructural amenities in every school, such as access to electricity, toilets, drinking water and functional classrooms, are at an optimal level.

Sarma further directed all concerned departments to ensure the timely execution and effective implementation of ongoing educational initiatives to strengthen the state’s education ecosystem and improve learning opportunities for students across Assam
