SHILLONG, June 18: Months after inducting 3,000 personnel, the Meghalaya government is opening the gates for another 1,000 police recruits to combat a persistent manpower deficit and aging force, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong announced Thursday.
Tynsong, who holds the Home (Police) portfolio, stated that while the state recently filled over 3,000 posts, new vacancies have already emerged due to retirements and other factors. The current shortfall is estimated to be around 1,000 positions.
The Police Recruitment Board is currently completing the necessary groundwork, with official advertisements for the selection process expected to be issued within the next few months.
The announcement comes at a critical time for the state’s youth, as government recruitment remains one of the few stable employment avenues. However, with the Deputy CM citing only a vague timeline of “a few months,” expectations are high for the government to avoid the delays that have historically dogged such drives.
Beyond recruitment, the Home department intends to launch outreach programmes in remote villages to improve public understanding of state and central laws. Tynsong noted that the police department would lead these workshops to strengthen public engagement and respect for the rule of law.
As the government prepares the formal notification, local youth leaders and NGOs are expected to monitor the drive closely, particularly regarding age-limit eligibility—a recurring point of friction in the state’s recruitment narrative.
