Kathmandu, June 21: The first general convention of Nepal’s ruling Rastriya Swatantra Party kicked off in Bharatpur Metropolitan City of Chitwan District on Sunday.
Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) president Rabi Lamichhane and Prime Minister and senior leader of the party Balendra Shah jointly inaugurated the three -day general convention in a special programme.
More than 4,200 representatives of the party are attending the first general convention of RSP, according to party sources.
President of the main opposition Nepali Congress, Gagan Kumar Thapa; CPN-UML leader Pradeep Kumar Gyawali; Nepali Communist Party leader Barshaman Pun; and chairman of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party Rajendra Lingden also attended the inaugural session as invitees.
Party president Lamichhane and Prime Minister Shah jointly inaugurated the convention by ringing the party symbol ‘Bell’. The general convention that will run until June 23 will elect a new leadership for the party.
However, party insiders said that incumbent party president Lamichhane is most likely to be re-elected.
More than 1,000 Nepal Police personnel have been deployed at the venue for security, said party sources. Communist Party of China (CPC) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) sent congratulatory messages for the general convention. (PTI)
