Transportation of coal from Jaintia Hills

JOWAI: The Jaintia Hills Truck Owners’ and Drivers’ Association (JHTODA) has set a six-day deadline to the state government seeking its intervention on the NGT ban on transportation of coal from Jaintia Hills.

“The NGT was in favour of allowing transportation of coal dumped on roadside but the government has not taken any measure in this regard,” the JHTODA president Balen Thubru said adding “if the government failed to comply with our demand, we have no other option except to take our own course of action”.

The decision to set a six-day deadline to the government was taken in a General Executive Committee held on Monday at Phramer.

“The NGT ban on mining and transportation of coal has badly affected not only the mine owners but also the truck owners and the drivers community and we demand the government to take full responsibility if any one dies of starvation”, he added.

Coal-laden trucks seized: Meanwhile, West Khasi Hills district administration apprehended three coal-laden trucks on July 4 and 5, our Nongstoin correspondent adds.

The seized trucks (ML-05H0957, AS-01DD-0075 and AS-01D2266) were carrying coal from the depot in West Khasi Hills.

West Khasi Hills SP, S Nongtnger informed on Monday that the Deputy Commissioner of West Khasi Hills had implemented section 144 CrPC on the coal mining and its transportation as per the directive of the NGT
