WILLIAMNAGAR, June 25: The Garo Students’ Union (GSU) Nengkhra regional unit has petitioned the local Bazar committee to stop the dumping of waste into the Wenok stream at Dobu village in East Garo Hills.
In a formal complaint, the GSU highlighted that garbage from Dobu Market is being dumped directly into the stream, which then flows into the Rongtam River and reaches the Nengkhra area. “This is severely affecting our locality,” the GSU stated, noting that the pollution has led to significant health hazards. Residents, particularly children, are reportedly developing skin diseases and other water-borne illnesses due to the contaminated water.
The union further pointed out that the dumping is destroying the river’s ecosystem and killing aquatic life. The river serves as the primary water source for domestic use and farming for several families in Nengkhra.
The GSU has urged the committee to implement a proper waste disposal system for Dobu Market, warning it will report the matter to the District Administration if the situation is not addressed.
