SHILLONG, June 27: A 30-year-old Meghalaya woman, reported missing in the June 24 flash flood that struck the NEEPCO Colony in Arunachal Pradesh’s Keyi Panyor district, was found dead during search and rescue operations on Saturday.
According to Keyi Panyor Superintendent of Police Angad Mehta, the body of Ballari Marak, also known as Olyn Synkly, was recovered at around 12 noon.
She was identified by local residents, the SP said. Ballari, daughter of the late Shangain Syngkli and Willina K Marak, was a resident of Bhoirymbong, Lumpshoping in Ri-Bhoi district.
Five persons were reported missing after the flash flood. Later that day, the body of one of them, Nirmala Gupta (35), was recovered following search for hours.
Authorities said rescue teams from the State Disaster Response Force and the district police were continuing efforts to trace the remaining three missing persons, identified as Elesh Marak (13), Tao Anjina (46) and Sourav Kumar.
Meanwhile, the Potin-Kimin Road remains blocked due to persistent landslides and continuous debris falling onto the carriageway despite repeated clearance efforts.
Police personnel have been deployed at vulnerable locations to assist in landslide clearance, regulate traffic and ensure public safety. The police said priority was being given to the movement of emergency vehicles, essential supplies and engineering equipment to restore road connectivity at the earliest.
