GSU seeks immediate start of GH road project, condemns opposition
TURA, June 29: The GSU Siju regional unit, along with residents of Nokatgre, Tolegre, Nengrugittim, Siju, and Dabalgre, on Monday condemned local opposition to the proposed Karukkol-Siju-Dabalgre road project and demanded that construction begin immediately. The union and local residents expressed concern over representations submitted by residents of Emangre village intended to stall or alter the project, which links via Rongmigre to Chokpot. They also highlighted that the contract for the work has not yet been allotted. “The overwhelming majority of local residents in these villages are waiting for this road. We view any further administrative delay caused by selective interests as a direct injustice to our people,” the union stated. In a memorandum submitted to the South Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, the GSU urged the PWD to expedite the allotment process and uphold the original approved alignment. They argued that the project is vital for the region’s development and the growth of eco-tourism. The union requested the DC’s office to reject the petitions from Emangre residents and ensure the project moves forward without further bureaucratic delay. They further called for the PWD to strictly oversee the work to guarantee high-quality execution.
Group seeks Edn Minister’s help in blocked school appointment in GH
TURA, June 29: The Achik Socio-Political Federation (ASPF) has petitioned Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui to intervene after a selected candidate was allegedly prevented from joining his post at Rajabala Higher Secondary School in West Garo Hills. The ASPF reported that Sahil S. Sangma was officially appointed as a chowkidar following an order issued on June 12, 2026. This appointment, made by the Special Interim Managing Committee, was intended to replace a temporary staff member, Sujan Ali. However, ASPF General Secretary Bernita Marak alleged that the school’s Vice Principal has refused to allow Sangma to assume his duties despite the formal order. “This situation raises significant questions regarding the rejection of a candidate who was officially appointed following due process. This committee was duly constituted by the relevant authority after the dissolution of the previous School Managing Committee,” Marak stated in her letter to the minister. The federation urged the minister to ensure the rightful candidate is permitted to start work immediately, arguing that the delay hinders the school’s functioning and undermines the integrity of the recruitment process.
