SHILLONG, June 29: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Monday chaired a high-level meeting with the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills, MeECL officials, cable operators, DTH providers, and internet service providers to kick-start a coordinated effort to remove non-functional cables, hanging wires, and unused infrastructure cluttering the city ahead of the National Games to be held in March next year.
Sangma acknowledged that the menace of overhead wires has been a long-standing eyesore in Shillong. These tangled cables not only pose safety risks but also severely spoil the aesthetic beauty of the “Scotland of the East,” marring its scenic charm, colonial architecture, and natural landscapes with a chaotic web of wires.
“With the National Games approaching, we are committed to improving the city’s appearance through a phased, practical approach,” Sangma said, urging all stakeholders to work closely with the government to restore Shillong’s visual elegance.
The initiative marks a much-needed beginning to address the visual pollution that has long diminished the city’s postcard-perfect appeal.
