Hands will be cut over Indus waters, warns Pakistan

NEW DELHI, June 30: In a sharp escalation of rhetoric amid ongoing tensions with India, Pakistan’s Climate Change Minister Musadik Malik issued a strong warning over the Indus Waters Treaty. Speaking publicly, Malik declared that any attempt to interfere with Pakistan’s rightful share of the river waters would be met with severe consequences. “If anyone lays a hand over our share of water, we’ll cut off that hand,” Malik stated firmly, adding that Pakistan had already warned of dire repercussions if deprived of its allocated waters. The remarks come as India continues to hold the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance following last year’s Pahalgam terror attack, with New Delhi asserting control over upstream flows and vowing that not a drop would reach Pakistan until cross-border terrorism ceases. Pakistani officials, including Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, have reiterated that the treaty remains legally binding and cannot be suspended unilaterally. The Indus River system is critical for Pakistan, supporting agriculture, drinking water, and livelihoods for millions in the country. (Agencies)
