Santa Clara, June 30: Co-hosts USA will look to make home advantage count when they take on Bosnia-Herzegovina in a Round of 32 clash at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Wednesday, with a place in the last 16 up for grabs.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side topped Group D after collecting six points from three matches.
The Americans opened their campaign with convincing victories over Paraguay (4-1) and Australia (2-0) before suffering a narrow 3-2 defeat to Turkey in their final group game, a result that did not prevent them from finishing top of the standings.
The USA will be aiming to build on an encouraging group-stage performance as they seek another deep run in the tournament. Their best World Cup finish remains third place in the inaugural edition in 1930, while they also reached the quarterfinals in 2002.
Victory on Wednesday would set up a Round of 16 meeting with either Belgium or Senegal.
Bosnia-Herzegovina, meanwhile, progressed as one of the best third-placed teams after finishing behind Switzerland and Canada in Group B. Sergej Barbarez’s side began with a 1-1 draw against Canada, suffered a 4-1 defeat to Switzerland, but bounced back with a vital 3-1 win over Qatar to book their place in the knockout stage. (AP)
