SHILLONG, July 2: The Meghalaya government is considering a temporary ban on the import of pigs from outside the state to contain the spread of African Swine Fever (ASF) and protect local pig farmers.
This was stated by former minister and Mawkynrew MLA Banteidor Lyngdoh after a meeting with Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister Sanbor Shullai on Thursday. Lyngdoh had raised concerns over the recurring ASF outbreaks and the sharp decline in pork sales affecting farmers.
According to Lyngdoh, the minister assured that the government would examine the possibility of temporarily stopping pig imports and, if required, issue an official notification. He also said a delegation would meet Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma within the next two weeks to discuss the matter.
Lyngdoh suggested that any import restriction should remain in force for three to four months before being reviewed. He stressed that the entry of pigs from outside the state could be contributing to the spread of ASF and urged the government to take a firm decision.
He also called for stronger support to local pig farmers by encouraging consumers to buy pigs reared within Meghalaya. The government, he said, would continue to monitor the situation closely and explore measures to safeguard the pig farming sector.
