Husband, in-laws flee after wife’s ‘murder’ in WGH

PHULBARI, July 2: A woman was allegedly tortured and murdered by her husband and in-laws in Bhangarpar village under Tikrikilla police station in West Garo Hills.
The victim, identified as Salema Khatun, died on Tuesday evening after being assaulted at her home. Her husband, Saddam Hussain, along with his parents, is absconding. Police have detained only the victim’s sister-in-law, who was present at the house when officers arrived.
According to the FIR filed by the victim’s brother, Chandmamuth Sk, at Bogulurbhita OP on Wednesday morning, Salema was repeatedly assaulted by her husband and in-laws. The family had allegedly been demanding money from her parents.
The victim’s parents and brother stated that Salema was often tortured and beaten by her husband, who frequently asked her parents for money. On the night of the incident, Saddam Hussain and his relatives took the injured Salema to a hospital in Assam. However, fearing exposure, they allegedly fled the hospital, leaving her body behind.
The victim’s family rushed to the hospital after being informed by Saddam that their daughter was admitted there. They found only her lifeless body. Her husband and in-laws have not been traced since.
Police have registered a case and launched a search for the absconding accused. Further investigation is under way.
