Man holding Tibetan flag sets self ablaze in UN protest, dies
New York, July 3: A man holding a Tibetan flag in front of the United Nations headquarters in New York has died after setting himself on fire on Thursday, according to officials. Law enforcement responded to a 911 call at about 6:30 pm and found a 52-year-old man with severe burns throughout his body, according to the New York Police Department. The man was taken to the hospital and later pronounced dead, according to police. Law enforcement are investigating the self immolation. China says Tibet has been part of its territory since the mid-13th century, and its Communist Party has governed the Himalayan region since 1951. But many Tibetans say they were effectively independent for most of their history and the Chinese government wants to exploit the resource-rich region while crushing its cultural identity. (AP)
Body of American pilot killed in Indonesian conflict recovered
Jakarta, July 3: Indonesian security forces on Friday recovered the body of an American pilot who was killed after armed separatists attacked and burned a small aircraft in the restive Papua region, a military commander said. Nicholas F Goselin, a pilot for an Indonesian aviation company, was shot dead Thursday shortly after he landed at the Ipdeheik airstrip in the mountainous province of Papua Highlands. The evacuation was carried out after troops secured the remote airstrip in a rapid operation. A rebel spokesman said the aircraft violated their ban on civilian flights in areas the separatist group considers its operational zones. He said the American pilot was killed because the aircraft continued operating despite the group’s warning. (AP)
Interpol names suspect in Monaco bombing
Paris, July 3: Interpol on Friday identified the main suspect in the Monaco bombing that reportedly targeted a Ukrainian tycoon with links to Russia as a 39-year-old woman from Ukraine who remains at large. The police organisation named Anastasiia Berezovska as the suspect in a Red Notice posted on its website seeking her arrest. Monaco authorities haven’t identified any of the three people wounded in Monday’s explosion at an apartment building entrance, but said they are a family and that they appear to have been specifically targeted. Media reports named Ukrainian construction tycoon Vadym Yermolaiev as being among the wounded. He has said he renounced his Ukrainian citizenship nearly a decade ago, and he was targeted by Ukrainian sanctions in 2023 for ties to Russia. (AP)
