New Delhi: Visiting US Senator John McCain on Thursday refuted the ruling Congress allegation that his country was involved in the Anna Hazare-led mass protest against corruption.

He, however, said it was a sign of a strong democracy that people were expressing themselves in a peaceful manner.

”People are entitled to their opinion, but the fact is that the US is not involved in what is taking place in the world’s largest democracy nor intends to be,” McCain said when asked about the ruling party allegation here.

The influential US Senator was speaking to the media after a visit to Jammu and Kashmir and holding talks with top officials here. Earlier he visited Pakistan before coming to New Delhi.

On the US State Department spokesperson’s comment on India’s handling of the protests, he said he was a Senator and so speaking for the US people, he would say that people in India were expressing themselves in a democraatic manner. (UNI)
