England, Mexico battle for quarter-final spot

MEXICO CITY, July 4: England will face one of their toughest tests of the 2026 FIFA World Cup when they take on co-hosts Mexico in a Round of 16 clash at the iconic Estadio Azteca on Monday, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.
Thomas Tuchel’s side booked their place in the knockout stage after a hard-fought 2-1 comeback victory over DR Congo, with captain Harry Kane scoring twice in the closing stages to rescue the Three Lions after they had fallen behind.Mexico, meanwhile, continued their impressive campaign with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Ecuador.
Goals from Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez secured the win and ended the nation’s 40-year wait for a World Cup knockout victory, while extending their unbeaten run in all competitions to 12 matches.
The hosts head into the contest in outstanding form, having won all four of their matches at the tournament without conceding a goal.
They have also won six consecutive matches in all competitions and boast an impressive record at the Estadio Azteca, where they remain unbeaten in World Cup history with eight wins and two draws from 10 matches.
England, however have dominated recent meetings between the two nations, winning each of the last four encounters. (Agencies)
