Body of 11-yr-old girl recovered in WB, man lynched for rape-murder

Baruipur, July 5: The body of an 11-year-old girl, who went missing a day ago, was recovered in Baruipur area in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district on Sunday, following which a mob lynched a man on rape-murder charges, police said. The girl’s body was found stuffed in a sack in Surjyapur Haat area this morning, triggering a protest by locals who blocked the Baruipur-Joynagar Road, burnt tyres and damaged a few police vehicles, demanding the arrest of the accused persons, a senior officer said. A man was beaten to death by angry locals on the accusation of his involvement in the girl’s death, a police official said. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari spoke to the deceased girl’s father over the phone and assured him that the culprits would be dealt with in the strictest manner and punished according to the law, sources said. The police said four people were arrested in connection with the girl’s death. (PTI)

Prashant Kishor to contest Bihar’s Bankipur bypoll

Patna, July 5: Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor on Sunday threw his hat in the ring for a bypoll to Bihar’s Bankipur assembly seat vacated by BJP president Nitin Nabin, terming it a “referendum” on the BJP-led government’s performance in the state. The announcement at a crowded press conference here was met with wild applause by party activists, as the former poll strategist urged “four lakh electors” of the constituency to “vote for making a difference”. The bypoll will be held on July 30. (PTI)

Maharashtra TET paper leak: Three more held in UP

Thane, July 5: The Maharashtra police have arrested three more persons from Uttar Pradesh in connection with the alleged Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) paper leak case, bringing the total number of individuals in custody to 10, officials said on Sunday. A state-appointed Special Investigation Team on Friday arrested Nareshkumar Mahore, Sanjaykumar Sharma, and Babulal Kushwaha, all employees of an Agra-based private printing firm, a police official said. The trio allegedly smuggled question papers out of a secure facility during the printing process. Police also recovered three live cartridges from Sharma. They were brought to Bhiwandi in Thane district, where the alleged paper leak first came to light, on Saturday. A magistrate remanded them to police custody until July 9. With the latest arrests, ten individuals have been taken into custody so far, said police. (PTI)

Hoshiarpur jail officials arrested over gangster’s viral prison video

Hoshiarpur, July 5: The Maharashtra police Punjab Police on Sunday arrested an additional superintendent and a warder of the Central Jail, Hoshiarpur, along with 10 others in connection with the investigation into a purported video allegedly recorded and circulated by a gangster from inside the prison. The arrests were made after a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probed the viral video allegedly recorded by inmate Manpreet Singh alias Manna, which surfaced on social media on June 14. The SIT found that a network involving inmates, outside facilitators and jail officials was operating in the case. (PTI)
