SHILLONG: Donald Ingty, who retired as Chief Commissioner, Customs, Central Excise & Service Tax,
North Eastern Region, has joined Martin Luther Christian University as its Registrar from July this year.
Ingty started his career as a school teacher before getting into the Central Administrative Services (Customs & Central Excise) in 1976 where he served until his retirement in 2012.
Speaking to The Shillong Times, Ingty said he was excited about being part of a pioneering Christian University in the North East and after meeting with the MLCU leadership and understanding the challenges ahead he decided to take the plunge.
“I am also in tune with the emphasis of MLCU on job-oriented academic courses, with special focus on skill development and experiential learning. In a State where unemployment and unemployability are major issues confronting youth and with Government of Meghalaya looking at training 1.96 lakh young people in the current 12th Plan period, MLCU can play a vital role in developing models for value added education, leading to value added jobs,” Ingty said, adding that this would arrest migration of educated youth from rural to urban Meghalaya.
About his vision for MLCU, Ingty said he would like to see the achievement and maintenance of financial stability, and put in place systems that would facilitate the same. “I would like to enhance the visibility and awareness of the MLCU to the people of Meghalaya in particular and the North East in general, including all stakeholders,” Ingty said.
He added that in the in the next 10 years MLCU should achieve a target of a minimum of 20,000 students, albeit, in a fiscally responsible manner, while at the same time strengthening the present high academic standards.
Ingty comes with vast experience in administration and has received several awards and commendations for his services. He replaces Rev. E.H. Kharkongor who will now be taking up other assignments in the University.
