SHILLONG, July 8: The HSPDP Youth Wing has urged the state government to extend the Meghalaya Grassroots Music Project (MGMP) to Nongstoin, noting that musicians in West Khasi Hills lack adequate platforms and financial support.
In a letter to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, the youth wing stated that local artists and the Ge Thymmei u Mulliang Society have been organising musical events to promote talent, but are unable to sustain them due to financial constraints.
The organisation cited a free musical event held at Nongpyndeng, Nongstoin, on June 27, which drew a large audience. However, limited resources prevented the organisers from accommodating all the artists who wished to perform.
The youth wing pointed out that while the MGMP has provided opportunities to artists in Shillong and other parts of the state, musicians from West Khasi Hills require similar backing. It also drew the government’s attention to local artists who have appealed for assistance via social media following the Nongstoin event.
The letter, signed by HSPDP Youth Wing president Korbarlang Syiemlieh and secretary Pynshai Joel Dkhar, urged the government to expand the initiative to the district to ensure local musicians have a sustained platform to perform and promote their work.
