New Delhi, July 10: England will face one of their toughest assignments of the 2026 FIFA World Cup when they take on an in-form Norway in the quarter-finals on Saturday, with manager Thomas Tuchel tasked with finding a way to contain tournament star Erling Haaland and keep England’s title hopes alive.
Norway have exceeded expectations to emerge as one of the surprise packages of the tournament. After finishing second in Group B ahead of Senegal, Ståle Solbakken’s men eliminated Ivory Coast and five-time champions Brazil to book a place in the last eight, scoring an impressive 12 goals in five matches.
Much of Norway’s success has revolved around Haaland, who has netted seven goals so far and sits just one behind Golden Boot leaders Kylian Mbappé and Lionel Messi. Supported by captain Martin Ødegaard’s creativity and the pace of Antonio Nusa and Andreas Schjelderup on the flanks, Haaland has spearheaded one of the most dangerous attacks in the competition.
England are expected to focus on disrupting Norway’s build-up play, which often begins with goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland’s accurate distribution from the back. The Scandinavian side are equally comfortable playing out from defence or switching quickly to long diagonal passes, making them one of the most tactically versatile teams in the tournament.
Stopping Haaland, however, remains England’s biggest challenge. The prolific striker thrives on crosses, cut-backs and through balls, meaning Tuchel’s defence will need to remain compact while ensuring Norway’s wide players are denied space to create chances.
England are likely to rely on defenders Marc Guéhi and Nico O’Reilly, with Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham expected to provide additional protection in midfield.
At the other end, Harry Kane, Anthony Gordon and Bellingham will be key as England look to dominate possession and exploit the spaces left by Norway’s adventurous full-backs through quick transitions and wide attacks.
With both teams enjoying impressive World Cup campaigns, the quarter-final promises to be an intriguing tactical contest. While England will seek to control possession and dictate the tempo, Norway will hope their direct attacking style and the clinical finishing of Haaland can carry them one step closer to a historic semi-final berth.
