Improved road to ease travel for Swer residents, schoolkids
SHILLONG, July 10: Daily travel for residents and schoolchildren in Swer is expected to become safer and more convenient following the completion of the improved approach road to Lum Swer, including the stretch leading to Ramakrishna Mission Higher Secondary School. Sohra MLA Gavin Miguel Mylliem inaugurated the road on Friday in the presence of Public Works department officials, traditional leaders and residents of the area. The improved road is expected to benefit hundreds of residents, particularly students who use the route to reach their schools. Besides improving access to educational institutions, the road is also expected to facilitate transportation and access to essential services for the local population. The inauguration programme was attended by the Sordar of Dorbar Shnong Swer, Acting Syiem of Hima Sohra M Majaw and PWD Executive Engineer R Kharkongor, among others. Students from Ramakrishna Secondary School and Shining Star School also presented cultural performances during the programme. Speaking on the occasion, Mylliem thanked Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, PWD officials, village authorities and the residents of Swer for their roles in the completion of the project. The Sohra MLA said the project was part of efforts to improve rural infrastructure and enhance connectivity and living conditions in remote communities.

Rotary Club of Shillong installs new office-bearers for 2026-27
SHILLONG, July 10: The Rotary Club of Shillong on Friday got a new leadership team for the 2026-27 Rotary Year during its installation ceremony held here. According to a statement here, Osmand Nongbri was installed as the new president, succeeding outgoing president Chandana Das. The new executive team includes Gurmeet Singh as vice-president, Sunil Arora as secretary and Akash Chirania as treasurer, along with a new board of directors. In his inaugural address, Nongbri highlighted the club’s legacy and stated that its initiatives would be guided by the global Rotary theme for 2026-27 ‘Create Lasting Impact’. He emphasised the club’s commitment to service projects designed to bring meaningful and sustained change to the community. Earlier, the outgoing president delivered her valedictory address, presented the annual report and conferred awards on members for their service over the past year. The event was attended by former Indian Ambassador Riewad V. Warjri attended the event as the chief guest, alongside presidents and secretaries of various sister organisations, including the Rotary Club Shillong Heritage, Rotary Club Orchid City Shillong, Rotary Club of Shillong Highlands, Inner Wheel Club of Shillong and the Rotaract Club of Shillong. Past district governors and the Rotary assistant governor were also present.
