SHILLONG, July 11: The Division of Animal and Fisheries Sciences (DAFS), ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, on Friday celebrated National Fish Farmers’ Day 2026 by organising an awareness and field demonstration programme for nearly 100 farmers from Ri-Bhoi district.
Speaking as the chief guest, Umroi MDC Isynei Hinge highlighted the necessity of community participation in grassroots fisheries initiatives. He urged local farmers to utilise ICAR’s resources and technical expertise to improve their livelihoods and overall development.
In his keynote address, ICAR-RC-NEHR Director Dr. G. Kadirvel identified enhancing fish productivity, expanding farming areas and mahseer breeding as critical priorities for the region.
He encouraged farmers to adopt a holistic approach by engaging with the ‘Aqua Village Model’, currently being promoted by the institute.
The programme also included a technical session at the ICAR fish farm, where experts demonstrated quality fish seed production techniques.
As part of the Tribal Sub Plan (TSP), the institute distributed 300 farm-produced fish seeds to each participating farmer.
