SHILLONG, July 12: The State BJP, a partner in the MDA-II government, has expressed optimism over the second phase of inter-state boundary talks, stating that renewed engagement offers an opportunity to resolve the remaining six areas of dispute.
Party general secretary Wankitbok Pohshna said the BJP is confident the process will produce results. He stressed that negotiations must focus on the concerns of residents in disputed areas to ensure a peaceful and timely resolution.
“The BJP is hopeful that the second phase of the boundary talks will move forward positively through dialogue and mutual trust, with the interests of the people remaining paramount,” Pohshna said.
His remarks follow the Meghalaya government’s reconstitution of three Regional Committees to restart discussions on the remaining sectors. These committees are tasked with submitting their reports within 45 days.
According to a June 30 notification, the unresolved sectors include Langpih in West Khasi Hills; Borduar, Nongwah-Mawtamur, and Deshdoomreah in Ri-Bhoi; and Block-I and Psiar-Khanduli in West Jaintia Hills.
The committees will be headed by Deputy CM PrestoneTynsong (Ri-Bhoi), Power Minister Mehtab Lyngdoh (West Khasi Hills), and Deputy CM Sniawbhalang Dhar (West Jaintia Hills). The panels include ministers, legislators, and representatives of autonomous district councils, with respective Deputy Commissioners serving as member-conveners.
The committees are mandated to coordinate with Assam officials, verify village claims, determine geographical contiguity, assess demographics, and conduct field inspections before submitting recommendations.
