AALBORG, July 12: While much of Europe is experiencing summer heat, Christmas spirit has arrived early in Aalborg, Denmark, where dozens of Santas, Mrs. Clauses and elves from around the world gathered for the annual World Santa Claus Congress. The midsummer event, now held in Aalborg after moving from a Copenhagen amusement park, has been a festive tradition since 1957 and will mark its 70th anniversary next year.
The four-day gathering brings together professional Santa performers who work in malls, stores and community events during the Christmas season. The congress allows them to exchange experiences, improve their performances and celebrate the joy associated with the holiday season months before December.
Despite the warm Danish weather, participants wore traditional Santa suits while taking part in parades, contests and activities such as gingerbread eating, gift wrapping and balloon modeling. Organiser and Aalborg Santa Peter Gislund said children welcome the early appearance of Santa, even if adults feel Christmas comes too soon.
The event attracts Santas from countries including Australia, Hong Kong, Canada, the United States and Japan. Among the participants was Tokyo-based Santa performer Paradise Yamamoto, who joined parades carrying a Japanese flag and spreading Christmas cheer. Norwegian Santa Robert Hercz said performers from different backgrounds share the same spirit of generosity and kindness.
Participants described the gathering as more than a celebration of costumes and traditions. They said the true meaning of Christmas lies in bringing happiness, sharing, and creating positive experiences for others.
The World Santa Claus Congress also highlights the idea that Christmas is not only a holiday season but a feeling that can be celebrated throughout the year. Danish Santa Simon Brøns said the festive spirit exists beyond December, adding that people can carry the joy of Christmas with them anytime.
The colourful event continues to combine humour, tradition and international friendship, turning a hot summer week in Denmark into a celebration of Christmas cheer. (AP)
