MAWKYRWAT, July 13: The Synjuk ki Rangbah Shnong ka Hima Maharam Syiemship (SRSHMS) held an emergency general meeting in Mawkyrwat on Monday to oppose the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Regulation and Administration of Land) (Amendment) Bill, 2026. The group claimed the proposed changes would undermine traditional institutions, including the Dorbar Shnong, Dorbar Raid, and Dorbar Hima.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, SRSHMS President P. Wanniang clarified that while the Synjuk does not oppose the bill in its entirety, it strongly objects to the amendment of Section 16.
The amendment proposes deleting the requirement for “prior consultation with the respective Dorbar Shnong, Dorbar Raid and Dorbar Hima” by the Executive Committee.
Wanniang stated that removing this clause suggests there is no longer a need to consult local traditional bodies, which indirectly strips them of their powers and functions.
The SRSHMS also declared its full support for the Synjuk Ki Nongsynshar Shnong ka Bri Hynñiewtrep (SNSBH), which has already rejected the amendment and demanded the immediate recall of the bill.
