England, Argentina set for blockbuster World Cup semi-final
ENGland vs ARGENTINA | THU, jULY 16, AT 12:30 AM

New York, July 14: Football’s most enduring rivalry is set to take centre stage once again as reigning champions Argentina and England lock horns in the FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-finals, with a place in Sunday’s final at stake.
The encounter promises to add another chapter to one of the sport’s greatest rivalries, one shaped by decades of unforgettable moments, from Diego Maradona’s infamous ‘Hand of God’ goal and his dazzling solo effort in 1986 to David Beckham’s controversial red card in 1998 and his penalty redemption four years later. Off the pitch, the fixture also carries historical significance because of the long-standing political tensions between the two nations, making every meeting a high-stakes affair.
Former England striker Robbie Fowler described the contest as one of football’s defining rivalries, saying every player understands the opportunity to become part of history.
“I think this is one of football’s iconic rivalries. It’s built not only on football and World Cup history but also on the broader history between the two nations. There have been so many unforgettable moments — the Maradona goal, David Beckham’s sending off, Beckham’s penalty and, of course, the backdrop of the Falklands conflict. Every player knows this is an opportunity to become part of football history,” Fowler said on ZEE5.
Both sides arrive in the last four after being pushed to their limits in the quarter-finals. England needed extra time to edge Norway 2-1, thanks to a brace from Jude Bellingham, while Argentina overcame Switzerland 3-1 after extra time to keep alive their hopes of defending the title they won in Qatar four years ago.
England’s attacking burden has largely been shared by captain Harry Kane and Bellingham, with both players scoring six goals in the tournament. Kane now stands on the verge of another personal milestone, requiring two more goals to move into the top three of the World Cup’s all-time leading scorers. The Bayern Munich striker is also chasing his first-ever goal in a World Cup semi-final after drawing a blank at the same stage in 2018. Bellingham, meanwhile, has emerged as England’s driving force in midfield. The former Borussia Dortmund star produced one of his finest displays of the tournament in the quarter-final, scoring twice to rescue England’s campaign and underline his status as one of the competition’s standout performers.Argentina continue to rely on the experience of Lionel Messi, but much of their success has been built around a well-balanced midfield featuring Alexis Mac Allister, Rodrigo De Paul and Enzo Fernandez. The trio has started every knockout game together, with Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Exequiel Palacios featuring only once during the group stage.
Julian Alvarez is also expected to return to Argentina’s starting line-up after impressing in the quarter-finals. The Manchester City forward will be hoping to emulate his heroics from the 2022 World Cup, where he scored twice against Croatia in the semi-finals.
Fowler believes the midfield battle could ultimately determine which side progresses.
“England need to stay compact and avoid dropping too deep because that only invites pressure. Argentina will look to dominate possession through midfield and create overloads between the lines, so England have to be disciplined defensively. Ultimately, whichever side wins the midfield battle without sacrificing its defensive structure will control the game,” he said.
Despite possessing some of the world’s finest attacking talent, neither side has enjoyed an easy passage through the knockout rounds. England and Argentina have repeatedly found themselves involved in closely contested matches, often winning by a single goal while also showing occasional defensive vulnerability. Their ability to outscore opponents has proved just as important as their defensive organisation.
England have received a timely boost with midfielder Declan Rice expected to recover from the stomach illness that forced him off early against Norway. Defender Jarell Quansah, however, remains suspended following his red card in the Round of 16 against Mexico.
Argentina have no fresh injury concerns and are expected to field a full-strength squad as they seek consecutive World Cup titles, a feat achieved only by Italy and Brazil in the tournament’s history.
Fowler also stressed that mentality could prove decisive as the tournament reaches its climax.
“The best teams stick to their game plan. They don’t panic even if they fall behind. They trust the process and continue making good decisions under pressure. At this stage of the tournament, the technical difference between the remaining teams is very small. In matches like these, mentality can be the deciding factor,” he added.
For England, victory would secure a first World Cup final appearance since lifting the trophy on home soil in 1966. Argentina, meanwhile, are chasing back-to-back World Cup triumphs under Lionel Messi and another opportunity to cement their place among football’s greatest international teams. (Agencies)
