SHILLONG, July 15: Alleging that the NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government lacks commitment to resuming small-scale coal mining, the Jaintia Coal Owners, Miners, Suppliers and Workers Association (JCOMSWA) on Wednesday warned of intensified protests if the prolonged ban continues to destroy the livelihoods of thousands of people dependent on the sector.
In a statement, the association said more than 12 years have passed since coal mining was halted, yet no meaningful progress has been made. It claimed the delay has devastated small-time miners, transporters, suppliers, labourers and their families, pushing them into severe financial hardship.
Highlighting the human cost, JCOMSWA alleged that some children from coal-dependent families have been forced to discontinue their education as parents can no longer afford school expenses. The association said the prolonged suspension has “affected and ruined” the lives of many across the coal belt.
Standing in solidarity with the affected families, JCOMSWA said it will intensify its opposition to the government. It urged the authorities to take immediate steps to facilitate the resumption of coal mining in accordance with the legal framework.
