NONGPOH, July 15: Three children were electrocuted to death after coming into contact with a snapped 11 kV overhead power line in Umtangling village under Umroi in Ri-Bhoi district on Wednesday afternoon.
The incident occurred around 2 pm while the children were walking through the village. A live power line had snapped and fallen on the ground. Unaware of the danger, they came into contact with the wire and died on the spot.
Village headman Bok Nongbsap described the tragedy as unimaginable. He confirmed that two of the deceased were siblings aged 11 and 12.
Nongbsap alleged that the village had earlier complained to the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) about a damaged transformer and deteriorating power lines, but no remedial action was taken.
