Guwahati: Sleuths of Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) on Tuesday seized contraband drug worth over Rs 27.5 lakh in two separate operations carried out in Guwahati city and arrested total five persons including three from Manipur.
An official of the NCB informed that three persons travelling in a Maruti Alto vehicle were intercepted near Jorabat while they were entering Guwahati city in an Alto car and about 1.5 kilogram heroin worth over Rs 25 lakh was seized from them. They were bringing the contraband substance from Manipur.
The arrested persons were identified as Anowar Khan, Musarif Khan and Faijur Rahman.
In another operation NCB sleuths seized about 3.2 Kilogram opium worth over Rs 2.5 lakh from two persons travelling in a motorcycle. They were identified as Ahsan Ali and Saifuddin Ahmed who hail from Barpeta district in Assam.
The seized opium was sourced from Manipur which has long border with Myanmar through which the international drug rackets are suspected to be operating.
Drug abuse and HIV infection have become bane of life for a large section in troubled Manipur.
A police official informed that the burgeoning Guwahati city where people especially students and youth from all the N-E states come to reside for various purposes has become a big market for contraband drugs with more and more young people getting hooked to it.
