SHILLONG, July 18: In a state where they rarely see eye-to-eye on policy, Meghalaya’s fiercest political rivals have declared a temporary ceasefire, finding common ground in the sky-blue and white of Argentina ahead of the World Cup final.
Chief Minister and NPP National President Conrad K Sangma and his most vocal critic, VPP president Ardent M Basaiawmoit, have traded political barbs for matching jerseys. In a state currently hyper-polarised by debates over the reservation policy and the roster system, the sight of both leaders publicly backing the same team suggests that football remains the only neutral ground left in the Khasi Hills. The two leaders shared photographs of themselves in Argentina kits on social media, reflecting a mania that has gripped the state. From sky-blue flags fluttering on local taxis in Laitumkhrah to skyrocketing jersey prices in Iewduh, the build-up to the final has overshadowed local political friction.
The VPP, known for its rigid stance on “clean politics” and government accountability, has notably softened its tone regarding the “Chief Minister’s Fan Parks.” Despite these venues being funded by taxpayer money—a frequent point of contention for the opposition—the VPP leadership has embraced the atmosphere, prioritizing the “beautiful game” over fiscal scrutiny for the duration of the tournament.
The local passion has already caught global attention. FIFA President Gianni Infantino recently shared a video on his official social media account featuring jubilant scenes from a Shillong fan park during Argentina’s semifinal victory. Infantino remarked that such moments demonstrate how the World Cup is celebrated far beyond the stadiums, providing a massive validation for Shillong’s reputation as the “Football Capital of India.”
As Argentina prepares to face Spain in the final, the political divide has been momentarily bridged. For a few hours this weekend, the only “roster” of concern to the state’s leadership will be the one taking the pitch in pursuit of global glory.
