Can Spain stop Messi’s fairytale farewell?
SPAIN VS ARGENTINA | mon, jULY 20, AT 12:30 aM IST

East Rutherford, July 18: Continental champions Spain and Argentina will lock horns in a historic FIFA World Cup 2026 final at the MetLife Stadium on Sunday, with both sides chasing footballing immortality in what promises to be a clash of contrasting styles.
The final pits Europe’s defensive powerhouse against South America’s attacking force, with Spain seeking only their second men’s World Cup title, while reigning champions Argentina aim to become the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to successfully defend the trophy.
Spain arrive in the final as one of the tournament’s standout teams, combining defensive solidity with clinical finishing under head coach Luis de la Fuente. Although teenage sensation Lamine Yamal has attracted widespread attention with his dazzling performances, it has been Spain’s disciplined backline that has laid the foundation for their success.
After conceding just once in the tournament — Belgium’s Charles De Ketelaere ending their remarkable 649-minute run without allowing a World Cup goal — Spain responded by defeating France 2-0 in the semi-finals. Mikel Oyarzabal converted a penalty before Pedro Porro sealed victory with a well-worked second-half strike.
The European champions have been particularly impressive defensively, restricting France to just 0.31 expected goals in the last four. Overall, opponents have averaged the same figure against Spain throughout the tournament, highlighting their exceptional organisation at the back.
Having recovered from an opening defeat to Cape Verde, Spain have since won six consecutive matches and recorded an unprecedented six clean sheets in a single men’s World Cup campaign.
Their unbeaten run now stretches to 37 international matches since a defeat to Colombia in March 2024. Victory in Sunday’s final would see Spain surpass Italy’s record established during their UEFA Euro 2020 triumph to register the longest unbeaten streak in senior men’s international football.
Standing in their way are an Argentina side chasing history of their own.
Already champions of the Copa America in both 2021 and 2024, as well as winners of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Lionel Scaloni’s men are bidding to become the first national team to win four consecutive major international tournaments.
Argentina reached the final after overcoming England 2-1 in the semi-finals. Despite falling behind early through Anthony Gordon, the defending champions responded strongly, with Lionel Messi orchestrating the comeback by creating goals for Enzo Fernandez and substitute Lautaro Martinez.
Unlike Spain, Argentina’s strength throughout the tournament has been their attacking firepower rather than defensive resilience. They have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last five matches but have scored at least twice in every game, amassing a tournament-leading 19 goals.
The tally represents Argentina’s highest-ever goal return in a single World Cup campaign, surpassing the 18 goals scored by the side that finished runners-up in the inaugural tournament in 1930.
Another victory would place Argentina alongside Italy (1938) and Brazil (1962) as only the third nation to retain the men’s World Cup title.
History, however, favours Spain in recent meetings between the two nations. Spain have won three of their four encounters with Argentina since the turn of the century, including a commanding 6-1 victory in an international friendly in 2018.
With Spain boasting the tournament’s meanest defence and Argentina possessing its most prolific attack, Sunday’s final is set to provide a fascinating tactical battle as two of world football’s dominant forces compete for the biggest prize in the sport. (Agencies)
