Purno to head NE MPs’ Forum

NEW DELHI: Veteran leader Purno A Sangma has been unanimously elected as the chairman of North East MPs’ Forum.

A meeting to reconstitute the forum after Lok Sabha election was held here on Wednesday.

Purno succeeded Mukut Mithi, Rajya Sabha MP and former Chief Minister of Aruancahl Pradesh as the Chairman of the Forum.

In the meeting, MPs from the region, cutting across party line, supported the former Speaker and MP from Tura as the Forum’s new Chairman.

Neiphiu Rio, Bhubaneswar Kalita, Dr Thokchom Meinya, Bijoya Chakravarty and Jitendra Choudhury were elected as Vice-Chairpersons while, Prem Das Rai, a Lok Sabha member from Sikkim, and Mizoram MP CL Ruala were elected as the new secretary general and treasurer of the Forum, respectively.

Further, Ninong Ering, Biswajit Daimary, Kamakhya Prashad Tasha and Sushmita Dev were elected as the general secretaries of the forum.

Later, in the evening all three MPs from Meghalaya- Purno, Wansuk Syiem and Vincent H Pala were felicitated by the Tribal Officers Front along with other tribal MPs from across the country including North East.

Purno attended the function along with Nagaland MP, Niphu Rio and Arunachal Pradesh MP, Nirang Erring.
