SHILLONG, July 20: Five days after a newborn girl was found floating in the Rongdal River, North Garo Hills Police are struggling to identify her parents. Authorities have now turned to the public to solve a case that has left the local community in mourning and investigators at a standstill.
The infant’s body was discovered near Rangsa village on July 15 at approximately 9 AM. While an investigation was immediately launched, police have been unable to establish her identity or locate her family.
Following a post-mortem examination at the office of the District Medical and Health Officer (DM&HO) to determine the cause of death, the body was moved to the Mendipathar Community Health Centre (CHC) morgue, where it remains for identification.
The lack of progress in the case has prompted an urgent appeal for community assistance. Police are asking residents to report any information regarding women who recently showed signs of childbirth or post-partum complications but are no longer with an infant.
“Every piece of information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, could prove crucial in advancing this investigation,” a police official stated.
Authorities are urged anyone with relevant leads or knowledge of an abandoned infant to contact Kharkutta Police Station immediately. All information provided will be examined as part of the ongoing probe.
