Shillong, July 21: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday directed officials to expedite the construction and expansion of Meghalaya Houses across major Indian cities, stressing that the facilities should function as a “home away from home” for the state’s residents travelling outside the state.
Chairing a virtual review meeting with the General Administration Department (GAD) and senior officials, Sangma assessed the progress of ongoing and proposed infrastructure projects relating to Meghalaya Houses and called for their timely completion while maintaining high standards of quality.
The Chief Minister emphasised that the facilities should be planned and developed in a manner that adequately meets the growing needs of students, patients seeking medical treatment, government officials and other citizens visiting different parts of the country.
According to an official statement, the meeting comprehensively reviewed the status of construction, expansion and modernisation works at Meghalaya Houses, along with proposals for developing new facilities. Projects in Delhi, Noida, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Vellore and Kolkata came up for detailed discussion, with the focus on improving infrastructure, service delivery and operational efficiency.
Sangma reviewed the progress of each project, examined implementation timelines and instructed officials to ensure that all works are completed within the stipulated schedule without compromising on quality. He also stressed the need for efficient management of the existing Meghalaya Houses so that they continue to provide comfortable accommodation and reliable services to people from the state.
The Chief Minister said these establishments should reflect the government’s commitment to the welfare of Meghalaya residents by serving as welcoming and well-managed facilities whenever they travel outside the state. He further directed the General Administration Department to closely monitor the execution of all ongoing projects and remove bottlenecks delaying pending works.
The review meeting also discussed measures to strengthen the overall functioning of Meghalaya Houses by enhancing administrative efficiency and improving visitor services. The state government believes the expansion and modernisation of Meghalaya Houses in key cities will improve accessibility and convenience for residents travelling for education, healthcare, official assignments and other purposes.
The initiative forms part of the government’s broader effort to upgrade public infrastructure and ensure that Meghalaya citizens have access to quality accommodation and support services across the country.
