SHILLONG, July 23: Forty days after the deaths of a young Hajong couple—Prinomi and Simanta—the police investigation into what is widely seen as a suspected murder continues to show no progress.
The bodies of 22-year-old Prinomi Hajong from Balat and 21-year-old Simanta Hajong from Ranikor were discovered in the early hours of June 14 inside a small roadside shed at Lumsohphoh in Nongthymmai.
They were found in a sitting position, prompting police to describe the deaths as a case of partial hanging and double suicide. The shed is located barely 50 metres from the café and shop where the pair worked.
Despite persistent doubts raised by their families and community organisations over the circumstances, the police have stuck to the suicide theory from the outset.
The families are still waiting for the post-mortem report — a delay that has left them in prolonged uncertainty and pain.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Hajong Students Youth Voice (HSYV) expressed deep sorrow and concern over the continued wait.
The organisation said that while the rest of the world moves on, the parents, siblings and relatives of the deceased wake up every day with the same unanswered questions and the same hope that clarity will finally arrive.
“The silence surrounding the post-mortem report has left the families living with uncertainty. They are not asking for sympathy alone—they are waiting for answers that can help them understand the fate of their children and begin the long journey toward healing,” the statement read.
HSYV described it as a tragedy that has deeply touched the conscience of the Hajong community.
It stressed that truth, transparency and justice strengthen public confidence and urged that the remaining procedures be completed at the earliest so that the families receive the post-mortem report and the investigation proceeds with fairness and dignity.
The student body reaffirmed that it will continue to stand peacefully with the bereaved families, guided by humanity rather than anger and by the belief that every life deserves the truth.
When contacted for updates on the probe, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said, “Investigation is in progress and we are now awaiting the post-mortem reports.”
