SHILLONG, July 27: East Khasi Hills emerged as the overall champions in the 23rd Meghalaya State-Level Wushu Championship-2026, which concluded at the Rajeev Wushu Hall, Assam Regimental Centre (ARC), Happy Valley, on Saturday.
Organised by the Meghalaya Wushu Association (MWA), the two-day championship saw the participation of around 300 athletes from all districts of the state, making it one of the biggest state-level Wushu tournaments organised by the association.East Khasi Hills topped the team standings with 300 points, while West Jaintia Hills finished runners-up with 180 points. East Jaintia Hills secured the third position with 100 points.
The championship featured competitions in both Sanda and Taolu events and also served as a selection trial to identify talented athletes for the proposed 39th National Games, scheduled to be held in Arunachal Pradesh in 2027.According to the MWA, the selected athletes will undergo intensive training and exposure programmes with the aim of winning medals for Meghalaya at the National Games.The championship was inaugurated on July 24 by Brigadier Vikash Rai Shandaliya, Commandant of the Assam Regimental Centre, who attended the opening ceremony as the chief guest. MWA president Donny R. Ranee welcomed the dignitaries, officials, coaches, athletes and spectators.
The closing ceremony was attended by Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA) vice-president Ian Lyngdoh as the chief guest, while Lieutenant Colonel Gangte, Officer In-Charge of the ARC Wushu Node and Boys Sports Company, was the guest of honour.Speaking on the occasion, MWA general secretary Jerry F. Wankhar thanked the Assam Regimental Centre for allowing the championship to be held at the Rajeev Wushu Hall and for extending logistical support.The association also congratulated all the medal winners and participants for their performances and sportsmanship.
