JOWAI: Jowai Police on Sunday arrested the mastermind behind the kidnapping of a 6-year-old boy from Mihmyntdu village on Thursday evening.

Bekingstone Syngkon of Mynthong Jowai was arrested at around 11:30 pm, West Jaintia Hills district police chief HG Lyngdoh said.

Earlier on Friday, one Chemi Phawa (30) of Lumpyrtuh Mihmyntdu was arrested in this connection.

It was Phawa and Syngkon who had planned the kidnapping and subsequently demanded Rs. 10 lakh from the parents of the boy for his release.

The boy, who was kidnapped for ransom by masked miscreants on Thursday evening, was abandoned on the National Highway the next night after police launched a massive manhunt.

The boy’s father, Charles Pakma lodged a complaint at Jowai PS that his son, Emi Lyngdoh was kidnapped by unknown miscreants on Thursday evening.

The boy’s mother later received a phone call demanding Rs. 10 lakh for her son’s safe release.

After the complaint was lodged, the Jowai Police swung into action to trace the boy. However, the kidnappers abandoned the boy on the National Highway NH-44 near Puriang village, East Khasi Hills on Friday at around 9-30pm.

The Mawryngkneng Police later handed the boy over to Jowai Police and subsequently the boy was reunited with his parents.
