Execution of Kynshi power project

SHILLONG: The State Government has decided to complete the land acquisition process for two major power projects – Kynshi Stage I and II — in West Khasi Hills district in next two months.

The State power minister Clement Marak told this to a delegation of the Synjuk Seng Bhalang (SSB) from West Khasi hills district which met him here on Thursday.

The delegation requested the minister to speed up the implementation of the two projects.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, the chairman of the Synjuk Seng Bhalang TS Shangrit said that the matter was now being handled by the Deputy Commissioner and he should “ensure that the land acquisition process gets completed at the earliest.”

The government handed over two projects of 450MW each to two private developers, Athena Energy Ventures Pvt Ltd and JayPee Group.

Meanwhile, the prime reason for the delay in execution of the Kynshi Hydro Electric Power Project is the stringent clauses of the newly-framed ‘Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013.’

“The developers of the Kynshi project will now have to abide by the clauses laid down in the new Act. It is because of this reason the project is yet to take off,” official sources said here on Thursday.

According to official sources, with the coming of this new act the deputy commissioner will now have to undertake a fresh assessment of the land to be acquired for the project.

He said that several issues have cropped up which need to be sorted out between the respective deputy commissioners and the private developers.
